Goats’ Day Off Natural Non-Dairy Lemongrass, Eucalyptus, & Citronella Essential Oil Lotion has no harmful, toxic ingredients. Instead, we have skin-nourishing essential oils and healthy oils to moisturize your skin while protecting it from insect bites. First, we use citronella essential oil which does not actually kill mosquitoes but repels them by manipulating their sense of smell. It is so non-toxic that it even spares the lives of mosquitoes. When applied on skin, the oil blocks other smells given off by the body (such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid) which mosquitoes use to track humans making it difficult for them to find us. It can even be applied on areas of skin where mosquitoes have already bitten to reduce itchiness and redness!
Secondly, we use lemongrass essential oil because it’s effective against a variety of insects including mosquitoes (known to carry malaria and dengue), fleas, ticks, and lice. In fact, lemongrass has been shown to be superior to commercial pest repellants and sustains a higher repellency for a longer duration. Coupled with eucalyptus essential oil, which has a compound called PMD which masks humans’ natural mosquito-attracting scent, and rosemary, which repels flies and mosquitoes, and you have a healthy insect repellant lotion which protects your skin while moisturizing it at the same time.
As the days get longer, outdoor activities like camping, hiking, barbeques, and ball games increase, so does mosquito and insect bites. Many people turn to toxic bug repellents that are absorbed into their blood through the skin. Studies now show that exposure to insect repellents and other pesticides indicates a higher risk of cancers, typically of the blood, brain, lymph system, soft tissues, stomach, prostate and breast. Citronella oil is safe for most people when applied to the skin as an insect repellent; and since it is diluted with healthy oils in our lotions, it should not cause an allergic reaction; however, because it might cause skin allergies in some people, please conduct a small skin patch test if you suspect you have skin allergies and wait for 24 hours. Also, since not enough is known about the use of citronella oil during pregnancy and breast-feeding, please avoid use if pregnant or nursing. Please do not use on children under two years of age.
