Could Big Tech Force Parallel Economy Social Media Platforms to Implement AI Censorship?

This article from JustTheNews, “Feds adapting AI used to silence ISIS to combat American dissent on vaccines, elections” reports on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms developed to track and monitor terrorists being repurposed to monitor and censor speech by American citizens. The algorithm is said to have been developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and is currently being used by social media companies to monitor content posted by users. So far, we know that traditional social media platforms implemented this censorship regime, but could Big Tech force Parallel Economy Social Media platforms to enforce them too?

The AI Flags “Troubling Content” for Censorship

The algorithm is designed to detect and flag content that might be considered harmful, such as “hate speech” or “extremist ideology”. The algorithm uses machine learning to analyze the text and images of posts, as well as the metadata surrounding them, such as the user’s location and social network connections. The algorithm is also designed to be constantly learning, adapting to new types of content and users as it is used.

AI Censorship Algorithms are Biased

The article argues that this use of AI algorithms to monitor speech is a threat to free speech, as it can lead to censorship of lawful and legitimate speech. The article cites various types of content that would have been flagged or removed by these algorithms, including posts critical of government policies or expressions of political dissent. The article also raises concerns about the accuracy of these algorithms, as they are based on the data and training they receive, which can be biased or incomplete.

Big Tech App Stores Require Parallel Economy Social Media Platforms to Have Content Moderation Tools

So, the question arises whether Parallel Economy Social Media Platforms like Parler, GETTR, Rumble, and TRUTH Social could be required to implement this AI censorship program in order for their apps to be included in the Google and Apple App Stores. It was widely reported that TRUTH Social was actually being prevented from inclusion on the Google Play Store due to their concerns over its “inadequate content moderation”.

On one hand, the inclusion of these apps in the app stores requires compliance with certain guidelines, including moderation tools to ensure the “safety and security” of users. On the other hand, these guidelines are open to interpretation, may be subject to change and are subject to enforcement by Big Tech organizations with heavy political biases.

Furthermore, Parallel Economy social media platforms like Parler, GETTR, Rumble, and TRUTH Social may argue that they should not be required to implement these AI censorship programs, as they are fundamentally different from mainstream social media platforms. These Parallel Economy social media platforms often tout their commitment to free speech and open communication, and implementing AI censorship programs would be counter to these values.

Could Parallel Economy Social Media Platforms be Forced to Use AI Censorship in Order to Remain on App Stores?

Obviously, the use of AI algorithms to monitor and censor speech on social media is a disgusting practice that poses a severe threat to free speech and open communication. I doubt that Parallel Economy social media platforms like Parler, GETTR, Rumble, and TRUTH Social would willingly implement these AI censorship programs, however I do wonder if they would be able to avoid doing so if the Big Tech platforms made them mandatory for inclusion on their app stores?

What do you think? Would Parallel Economy Social Media Platforms be Able to Fight AI Censorship? Would you still use these platforms if they had no apps that you could install on your phone?
